Blackwall Tunnel
As part of the transport network upgrade in preparation for the 2012 Olympics, the 25-year-old ventilation systems in the northbound Blackwall Tunnel are being replaced and upgraded. These systems provide vital air-quality control, as well as smoke extraction in emergencies.
Infrastructure specialist M&E contractor, VVB Engineering Services Ltd, are carrying out the upgrade, in collaboration with main contractor BAM-Nuttal. Noise control was a key consideration, as some of the ventilation shafts are located in noise-sensitive areas.
Allaway Acoustics provided a high-value turnkey package for VVB, taking delivery of the large axial fans from Flakt Woods, building them into portal frames with associated dampers and attenuation, and craning them directly into position down the shafts. Offsite prefabrication not only ensured a consistently high-quality installation, but also minimised site time and hence disruption to this strategic river crossing.
